Day 6: Who’s Gonna Save Us Now

“Who’s Gonna Save Us Now” was the track that conveyed everything that we wanted Crystal Cities to be. It maintained the dreaminess of the earlier songs like “Cut Me Loose” and “Talking To Myself” but also had this driving energy to it, not to mention some darker undertones. It was a track that certainly appealed to my more personal musical tastes – bands like The National, Editors, and Interpol.

Geoff had sent me a demo of the song in early 2017. As soon as I heard it I knew it was something special. I worked on some parts and we got in the rehearsal room right away. Like with all special songs, it already sounded great on the first live run through.

“Who’s Gonna Save Us Now” took months to record. It became a meticulous process but we wanted to get it right! We even scrapped vocals for the entire song so we could re-record them again and get them perfect!

It’s gone on to be our most popular track and receive many nice reviews from blogs from around the world.

"Who's Gonna Save Us Now" Lyrics

Can you take the wheel
My head’s so heavy and my legs,
They won’t stand still
Like the back of my hand
I’ve lost my way
But I know that there’s a plan

Ahh Ahh
Ahh Ahh
Tell me who’s gonna save us now
Ahh Ahh
Ahh Ahh
Tell me who’s gonna save us now

I can see the door
But the light’s so low
And my feet can’t touch the floor
And I heard you say
If I only knew
What I didn’t know yesterday

Ahh Ahh
Ahh Ahh
Tell me who’s gonna save us now
Ahh Ahh
Ahh Ahh
Tell me who’s gonna save us now

Put your hand upon the wheel
The road has lost its thrill
I can hear the lions roar
When the oceans all stand still
The house upon the hill Told you how to feel

Ahh Ahh
Ahh Ahh
Tell me who’s gonna save us now
Ahh Ahh
Ahh Ahh
Tell me who’s gonna save us now
Who’s gonna save us now
Who’s gonna save us now

"Who's Gonna Save Us Now" Music Video Teaser

It must have been about 45 degrees celsius the day we shot this scene. The location is Gordons Bay in Sydney. Anyone who’s been to Gordons Bay will know the ridiculously steep hill that you have to walk down in order to get to the beach below. What people probably wouldn’t know is the struggle involved in carrying heavy music equipment up and down said hill on one of the hottest days of the year.

Originally this scene was meant to appear in the music video but in the end it didn’t really make sense to include it. Thus, even after all the effort we put in making it, the footage ended up on the cutting room floor. The silver lining I suppose was that we were able to use the footage as a bit of a prelude to the actual video. Not to mention the thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing swim we had after we had finished shooting.
