Day 5: Binary Eyes

Binary Eyes was written from the single guitar riff that you can hear throughout the track. I was just sitting on the couch at home playing random riffs and then this one came up. From there the track pretty much wrote itself.

I was going for a bit of a Bowie-esque vocal on it, trying to make the vocal delivery relaxed and dreamy while letting the band groove and the guitar riff do its thing.

The meaning behind the lyrics came from an odd place of inspiration. I had just read an article that theorised that our world and reality that we live in is just an elaborate holographic computer program constructed for us. So, I had this idea of writing about what if everything we had ever done or thought about as an individual or our world as we know it is actually just an advanced computer algorithm. Crazy right? or what if……?

The track was mixed by Sean Cook in LA, putting his stamp on it, Sean has worked with artists such as Big Scary and was in a Brisbane band called Yves Klein Blue.

For me, I really dig when we play the track live and it kicks in for that chorus section after the first verse – “Man, it really makes me wonder”. It goes into a straighter eighth note groove feel and lifts before coming back down to the middle 8 section before building again into the outro.

"Binary Eyes" Lyrics

What if all that we see
Is just patterns made of binary
Everyone, just numbers
Like zero’s and one’s

What if
We see
Is just through binary eyes

Man, it really makes me wonder
If everything is just number
And all the colour, Winter, Summer
Is just a sequence made of numbers
Man, it really makes me wonder
If everything is just a number
And everything I’ve ever said and done
Is just a code made up of zero One’s

What if
We see
Is just through binary eyes

What if
We see
Is just through binary
What if (Really makes me wonder)
We see (We are only numbers)
Is just through (Really makes me wonder)
These feelings
What if (Really makes me wonder)
We see (We are only numbers)
Is just through (Really makes me wonder)
These binary (We are only numbers)
What if (Really makes me wonder)
We see (We are only numbers)
Is just through (Really makes me wonder)
Binary (We are only numbers)

And it really makes me wonder (How could)
If we are all just made of numbers (Somethin’ feel so good)
Man, it really makes me wonder (How could)
If we are all just made of numbers (Somethin’ feel so good)
And everything I’ve ever said and done (How could)
It’s just a code made up of zero one (Somethin’ feel so good)
Man, it really makes me wonder (How could)
If we are all just made of numbers (Somethin’ feel so good)
Man, it really makes me wonder

About Filming The Music Video

“For the ‘Binary eyes’ music video I wanted to display a slight amount of satire, this being the historical statues with ‘modern-day’ quirks, to bring a lightness to the more serious themes the song presents. My interpretations of the themes being ‘we all made up of the same essential things, a brain, heart, curiosity’ and ‘the frightening feeling that we’re only a narcissistic speck of dust in the universe’, these lead me to my inspirations which were; ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’.”
– Vittoria Merlino Dentice (Director)

“We decided to work with Vittoria again for this clip as we were so pleased with her direction on “Who’s Gonna save Us Now”. She really understands the bands vision and ties in the visuals perfectly with our music. We spent a couple of days filming up at the central coast, getting lost in a grass maze with ponies, pinata’s, and concrete statues that come to life. Strangely enough no drugs were involved in the making of the video.”
